FULL HD3D ™

Utilizing SENSIO® 3D technology to deliver 3D content over conventional 2D infrastructure, the new VIZIO XVT Pro Full HD3D TVs display stunning 3D content that the user can view with XpanD active-shutter glasses (sold separately). Unlike other 3D TVs that use passive stereoscopic imaging, VIZIO’s Full HD3D TVs can display full 1080p video to each eye by rapidly alternating between the left-eye and right-eye images within the same visual space. The special active-shutter glasses, which communicate with the television over Bluetooth, then transform each lens from opaque to transparent in perfect synchronization with the images displayed on the TV, which allows for delivery of the full frame rate capable by the television for the ultimate 3D HDTV viewing experience.

These sets can produce 3D images from SENSIO encoded material on conventional DVD and Blu-ray players, as well as from future distribution channels such as pay per view, video on demand, DTV and HDTV broadcasts.

Wireless HDMI

Eliminating the need for an HDMI cable from source components to the display, the 72″, 55″ and 47″ XVT Pro Series have an integrated Wireless HDMI receiver built-in, using SiBEAM’s robust 60 GHz technology to receive HD content from high definition sources such as Blu-ray players or set-top boxes with full HD 1080p resolution when paired with a separately available VIZIO XVT Pro Wireless HDMI Adapter. The XVT Pro Adapter supports up to 4 HDMI sources and operates at 60GHz to avoid interference with other wireless devices in the home like cordless telephones and wireless networks that operate at 2.4 and 5 GHz.

The NVU65 projected high quality the moment I unpacked it. There is no plastic or flashy trim here. The bezel is medium silver in color with a brushed finish and is made entirely of aluminum. The silver bezel is a limited edition item. The normal color is black brushed aluminum. The base is also a heavy metal casting. Even the rear cover is metal. Badging on the lower right and left is minimal with a small NuVision logo and a one-inch strip containing status lights and the IR sensor. On the right side of the TV are buttons for power, channel, volume, menu and input. The panel weighs over 140 pounds and as such, I needed a strong friend to help me lift it up and onto the tabletop stand. I expect this TV will most commonly be hung on the wall. At less than four inches thick the NVU65 is a natural for on-wall installations.

All inputs and connectors face downward and are recessed for easy cable management. There are four HDMI, two component video, two S-video and two composite video inputs. There is a 15-pin VGA input for a computer. Audio connections include two speaker level outputs via spring tabs and a coax digital output which supports Dolby Digital and PCM. NuVision does not include speakers with the NVU65 leaving that choice to the integrator. The on-board amps are rated at 10 watts per channel. Also included are analog stereo outputs. Finally there is an RF input for a cable or antenna feed. The lone control input is called NuControl Card. This is an RJ-45 connector that carries bi-directional RS232, and IR.

The NVU65FX5 features a 120 Hz refresh rate. This is fairly common with modern LCD panels but not every manufacturer does it right. NuVision fortunately does. 60 frames-per-second (fps) material is displayed using a 2:2 cadence to achieve 120 Hz. Film-mode material originating at 24 fps from Blu-ray disc can be played with a 5:5 cadence where each frame is repeated five times or you can turn on the frame interpolation feature which NuVision calls Frame Forward Motion (FFM). When this is engaged, the NVU65 compares one frame to the next and creates four new frames to fill in the missing information. The three available settings; low, medium and high; control the degree to which the smoothing is applied. Low only adds frames in fast action sequences. High always adds frames, and medium falls somewhere in between.

The remote is one of the best I’ve ever seen included with a TV. It has a metal faceplate and a thick rubberized back. The buttons have a nice soft feel and click with the extra quality usually found in high-end products. This is one of the rare remotes that include discrete input buttons. There isn’t one for HDMI 4 but I suspect that is because this remote is included with other NuVision models that only have three HDMI inputs. A discrete code for HDMI 4 is supported through the RS-232 interface. The volume and channel buttons are shared with menu navigation. The Day and Night buttons toggle presets for the backlight level. You can also leave the backlight on Auto so it changes with the level of room light. Also included are buttons for the different aspect ratios and PIP functions. You can also freeze the image at any time. Pressing Display brings up info about the current input, input resolution, and refresh rate. One omission is a single for the 1:1 pixel mode. To set this you have to press Enter and 3.

The NuVision NVU65FX5 really impressed this diehard plasma fan. It did extremely well on the bench and produced a very accurate and contrasty image. Video processing was top-notch and the display had all the features anyone would need without the gimmicky ones found on many TVs today. Styling and build quality was also top-notch. This TV would fit right in to a luxury media room. Considering this is an exclusive boutique product it’s priced very competitively. With its prodigious light output, it will work in any environment. By simply lowering the backlight, it’s equally capable of showing a movie in an otherwise darkened room.

If you have been looking for an HDTV that eliminates pesky motion blur while viewing action-packed Blu-ray discs, you should be very interested in what JVC is calling their “Clear Motion Drive III” technology. That technology is integrated into their JVC LT-42X899 LCD HDTV and JVC states that this process eliminates edge blur and ensures an extremely clean image, no matter what type of movie or TV show you happen to be watching.

The impact that the LT-42X899’s 42-inch flat-panel TV makes on everyone who comes into contact with it is one of immediate respect. This unit’s black gloss finish, gun metal trim and anti-reflective deep black screen sends off a feeling of power that one does not get from the usual LCD TV’s currently seen at your local home theater store. The front panel is designed with simplicity and does not feature any inputs at all on the front of the unit. The three HDMI (v1.3) digital inputs, the two component video inputs, along with the S-Video and three AV inputs are all situated on the back of the TV.

Looking closer at the unit’s speakers that are attached to the side of the flat panel, you will notice that JVC has incorporated twin cone speakers that are designed with a bass reflex, thereby sending off a more powerful bass sound from these thin speakers than you would expect. The audio is rated at 20 watts of total power, but you will still need a complete surround-sound audio system to experience Dolby Digital in all its glory when watching the latest action-packed movie from the Hollywood studios, but you should have no problem with the clean and concise audio emanating from this unit when watching a typical TV program.

The main mode for viewing movies was the “Theater Mode”, which produced more color saturation than the “Normal Mode” and will turn any action sequence into a much more cinema-like movie experience. This menu will allow you to adjust the TV’s volume, brightness levels and surround-sound mode with ease. The HDTV’s 1920×1080 resolution really brought out the action movie’s deep blacks and penetrating whites, while never going too far with the vividness of the color saturation, keeping the action scene “natural” and not contrived or artificial-looking.

A Sony BDP-S350 Blu-ray player was connected to the JVC LCDTV and the Blu-ray of the movie “Eagle Eye” (Dreamworks) was popped into the player’s tray during the demo for this review. This movie features a lot of deep blacks during the night action sequences, so the LT 42X899 was put to the test of displaying these scenes in true 1080p resolution, as well as eliminating any motion blur that these sequences could cause with a lesser LCD model. During the scene in which Shia LeBouf’s apartment is practically decimated by an unknown force, the detail of the glass shattering out of his windows while his entire apartment’s walls are collapsing in on him was breathtaking in its realism.

High Points:
• Excellent anti-glare 1080p LCD screen that outshines most other LCD
HDTVs in the market today.
• No motion blur during action sequences, which makes for an outstanding home theater experience if you happen to be an action-movie fan.
• 36-bit processing brings out colors brilliantly, further enhancing the color saturation levels, resulting in a much more ‘natural’ high-definition home theater experience.
• The three HDMI connections contained in this HDTV means that you can connect all of your high-def components easily.

Low Points:
• The width of this model’s frame should be thinner, as most consumers nowadays are looking for A/V components that naturally blend in with their living room or media room’s walls.
• Bass emanating from the unit’s speakers did not sound powerful enough during this demonstration, which means that if you are going to use the LT 42X899’s main speakers as your only source of audio, you will be greatly disappointed while watching a high-energy Hollywood blockbuster on this unit.
• The lack of backlighting in the remote control results in a poorly designed remote unit that will be hard to find in your darkened home theater set-up.
• Not enough surround-sound modes that would allow a more fully encompassing sound stage while playing back a DVD that needs specific sound dispersion to enjoy, such as a sports movie, or while playing a video game on the HDTV that requires a more impacting, vibrant dynamic sound.

Conclusion
In the past, $1,800 would not have bought you an HDTV of this size or of this quality, but with the recession now in full control of our economy, JVC realizes that it must appeal to the average consumer who wants a true HD experience as soon as possible, but is also concerned about losing his job and is not willing to pay an arm and a leg to experience true HD.

That type of consumer does not have $4,000 or more to spend on a high-end HDTV, so JVC has taken the needed step of incorporating great design elements into a low-end price range when it comes to their LCD TV lineup, and I applaud them for doing so.

Want an LCD HDTV with the latest advances that costs hundreds of dollars less than comparable models? Look to Vizio and its XVT Series LED-backlit VF551XVT.

The 55-inch Vizio XVT VF551XVT (XVT stands for Extreme Vizio Technology) offers the two primary features found in today’s top-of-the-line HDTVs. There’s a full HD 1080p display utilizing the company’s proprietary 240Hz SPS (Scenes Per Second) Smooth Motion technology, along with TruLED (light-emitting diode) illumination. The full array of LED backlighting is composed of 960 tiny LEDs in clusters with local dimming. This model offers a 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and response time of 5 milliseconds (ms).

The LED illumination provides very consistent brightness and contrast across the entire screen. And Vizio’s Smart Dimming allows for clusters of LEDs to be turned off, which produces improved blacks and higher contrast. The 240Hz refresh rate means that the images are refreshed 240 times per second. The Smooth Motion Effect option activates Motion Estimation/Motion Compensation (ME/MC) circuitry that, in turn, helps to suppress motion judder or “stuttering” of the image when the camera pans across a scene, or if there is horizontal motion in the scene.

The VF551XVT also includes SRS TruVolume and SRS TruSurround. When the programming switches to a loud commercial or when changing channel results in a volume fluctuation, SRS TruVolume provides a comfortable and consistent sound level. The SRS TruSurround offers a pleasant surround-like effect.

A 49-button remote control is included, which is programmable and supports up to three more devices: a DVD player, a home theater system or audio amplifier, and a cable or set-top box. It even has a handy HDMI button to access satellite/cable receivers or Blu-ray players.

December will bring the VF552XVT with Vizio Internet Apps (or VIA), for the same price of $2,199. The 552 will be identical to the 551, except for the additional Internet-access utilizing a Yahoo’s Widget Engine and built-in wireless (802.11n dual-band) network capability, so you won’t need a wired connection in your family room.

The VIA feature will include Accedo Broadband, Amazon Video On Demand, Blockbuster On Demand, Flickr, Netflix, Pandora, Rhapsody, eBay, Facebook, RadioTime, Revisions3, Rallypoint Sports, Showtime, Twitter and Vudu.

It also supports Adobe Flash, and future apps will be added via firmware updates.

The remote for the 552 will have embedded Bluetooth (for easy paring of Bluetooth devices) and a sliding QWERTY keyboard hidden beneath the primary keypad. It was pretty neat and easy to operate.

So how did the VF551XVT stand up to seemingly superior TVs? Pretty darned well. I had low expectations, as I normally review top-of-the-line models from Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, Mitsubishi, Pioneer and the like.  The black levels on the Vizio were good and provided better-than-average contrast for most filmed Blu-ray content such as The Dark Knight, and including the recently released Gladiator (Extended Version), The Deep, and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (Extended Version).

And thanks to the 240Hz SPS feature, film judder in fast-motion scenes was negligible, especially in the opening high-speed sequence in Quantum of Solace. DISH Network’s 1080i signals from HBO’s True Blood, Fox’s Fringe, and HD-NET’s InFocus travelogues looked clean, crisp and clear, offering very little video noise.

The sound quality of the integrated 30-watt soundbar was better than many sets, though a home theater audio system is always recommended.

Is the VF551XVT the best LCD HDTV I’ve reviewed? No, but it performs admirably and it is very reasonably priced, costing hundreds of dollars less than a comparable Toshiba or over a $1,000 less for a comparable Samsung. And the 552 model adds Wi-Fi network capability and Internet access, all for a little more than $2,000, to make it a winning combination.

Last year, the LCD buzz was all about 120Hz refresh rates for smoother moving images. This year there’s 240Hz refresh rates, but the real news is that LCD TVs are going green—and improving their picture quality at the same time. Enter the brightest new TV star, LED (light emitting diode) backlighting. It’s much more energy efficient and more expensive than standard fluorescent backlighting—and it is showing up in numerous 2009 models.

There are two types of LED backlighting: edge-lit and full-array. Some sets that utilize full-array LEDs also include local dimming, which allows individual LEDs or clusters of them to turn off in dark scenes, improving black levels and detail. The only drawback is that LCD TVs using full-array LEDs are not normally ultrathin and can measure up to about 4.5 inches deep.

Toshiba Regza’s 55SV670 LED LCDTV uses the full array to light its a 55-inch 1080p LCD screen—and utilizes local dimming. With LED backlighting, the dynamic contrast of the SV670 is pumped up to whooping 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Other image enhancements include ClearScan 240Hz with a new backlight scanning technology for even smoother fast-moving images. The 240Hz quadruples the traditional progressive scan rate of 60Hz (or 60 frames a second) to 240Hz (or 240 frames per second).

Another eco-friendly feature called AutoView dims or brightens the screen according to ambient room lighting and the incoming video signal. Other key video enhancement features include CrystalCoat Contrast Enhancer with antireflective properties and Toshiba’s PixelPure 5G 14-bit internal digital video processor that provides improved overall detail. Audio is rated at 10 watts per channel and features Dolby Volume to keep volume levels consistent—as in no really loud commercials. There’s also Audyssey EQ.

Connection was easy and straight-forward. To calibrate this LCD set for optimal picture playback, I used a new Blu-ray test disk from Marvell entitled Qdeo HD Video Evaluation. The disc allows you evaluate the video processing of a particular TV, as well as to calibrate and correctly set contrast, brightness, black levels, color, sharpness, and gray scale among other video settings.

With all of these eco-friendly features and innovations, is the TV any good? With Toshiba’s SV670, I can fairly say that LCD technology is finally coming of age with a full array of features that enhance the overall image quality and clarity of the display.

Local dimming greatly enhances contrast and brings out detail in dark scenes.

The dark scenes looked accurate, with subtle variations in blackness from standard HDTV fare, most notably in the starfields of ABC’s Defying Gravity and the vibrant colors and quick cuts of USA’s Burn Notice. The very dark scenes in the newly released Blu-ray version of Watchmen (Director’s Cut) and The Dark Knight showed detail and color gradations not seen on most other LCD TVs.

And the splash of vibrant colors from Disney’s 50th Anniversary Sleeping Beauty was especially compelling. Overall, the images on the SV670 were markedly superior and uniform. if you more accurately control brightness and contrast, the images displayed will look more realistic, natural and life-like across the entire palette.

The colors displayed on the 55SV670 were exceptionally rich, and vibrant with very deep blacks (for an LCD TV) giving you the feeling and clarity of “you are there.” Black levels and contrast were several grades above other LCD HDTVs I’ve reviewed.

The beauty of LED backlighting lies not just with its eco-friendly features, but with its excellent contrast and deeper blacks that reveal more depth and detail—while providing more precise color saturation across the entire color spectrum.

If you are looking to conserve energy and still want the best possible LCD TV, you have to look at LED-backlit TVs like Toshiba’s 55SV670. It could be the best LCD the company has produced.

Samsung Electronics has successfully developed the world’s thinnest LCD panels to be used in LCD TVs with light emitting-diode (LED) backlights.

The world’s biggest LCD panel maker employed its own super-shrink technology, a combination of 3.9-millimeter thick glass and “needle slim” technology to achieve the largest viewing area within the smallest outline dimensions.

“These super-shrink LCD panels meet the specifications for slimmer LED TVs where display frame size is critical,” a Samsung spokesman Kim Choon-gon said.

For the product, the South Korean flat-screen maker has newly developed core components and realigned the backlight unit structure, Kim said.

“Samsung is still gauging the right timing for the mass production of the panels. But it is highly unlikely it will be this year,” according to the spokesman.

The announcement came as “slim” has emerged as the top buzzword for Samsung Electronics’ TV business this year due to its aggressive “LED TV” campaigns.

The company’s LCD business department has begun mass-producing the industry’s first ultra-slim panels suited for large size TVs.

Its edge-lit LED backlighting offers lighter weight and thinner designs, which are preferable for wall mounting over bulkier direct-lit LED LCDs.

While a direct-lit LED backlight will project light forward across the full expanse of the display from the front, edge-lit LEDs emit light from a row of LEDs on the top and bottom of every panel, using less power.

According to Samsung executives, the edge-lit technology gathers the light toward the center of the display and bends it, reflecting it forward through a light-guide plate that precisely focuses the light for outstanding picture quality.

“Regardless of the panel size, Samsung is still maintaining a full high-definition viewing quality and 5,000:1 contrast ratio,” Kim said.

Samsung, which is capturing most of the global LED TV market, is planning to sell over 10 million LED TVs in 2010, inspired by the rising demand for slimmer and high-end TVs. Most of the LED TVs that Samsung is set to sell are edge-lit based.

Along with slimmer LCD panels for television sets, Samsung has also been applying the similar slimmer technology to manufacture high-end monitors and portable notebooks.

Its 24-inch LCD panel for a monitor is highlighted 3.5 millimeters thick, while the 12.1-inch LCD panel for a notebook is 1.64-millimeters thick, officials said.

The Sony KDL-70XBR7 BRAVIA is one of a small number of options available to the consumer looking for a seventy inch picture but not wanting to use a projector.  The largest of the XBR7 series, the 70” KDL-70XBR7 offers a large screen and 1080p resolution along with a range of picture enhancement technologies.

Sony’s 70” XBR7 offers a full 1080p/24 experience, as well as Motionflow 120Hz technology, which effectively doubles the frame rate of HD content to help smooth out fast movements.  An on screen contrast ratio of 1,500:1 is achieved through the Advanced Contrast Enhancer circuit, which creates darker blacks without losing fine details.

10-bit technology is featured in both the KDL-70XBR7’s processor, but in the panel as well.  The combination of the two allows a much greater ability to transition between colors and helps to eliminate sharp changes.

With the BRAVIA name comes Sony’s much touted BRAVIA Engine 2 Pro.  The company’s most advanced video processing system, the BRAVIA Engine 2 Pro works to ensure clarity of picture, and includes Sony’s Digital Reality Creation technology.

A total of four HDMI inputs are available on the 70XBR7, as well as two component ins, three composite, and one each of S-Video and PC.  The television features 5.1 channel audio outputs including one analog and one optical.

The 70” XBR7 BRAVIA features an Ethernet port which lets users access JPEG files from DLNA enabled PCs and other devices.  An included USB port allows for viewing of JPEGs as well, along with playback of MP3 audio files.

JVC (Victor Company of Japan, Limited) recently unveiled their latest professional lines of HD LCD monitor – the new Xiview GD-32X1. Touted to be the thinnest and lightest in the market of 32-inch LCD display, Xiview GD-32X1 weighs only 5.7kg and comes in a mere 6.4mm thick casing. Now that’s technology!

The new Xiview GD32X1 features JVC’s unique picture engine, offering a 4000:1 contrast ratio and wide colour gamut (100% of sRGB and 90% of Adobe RGB) to render images in exceptionally high resolution, which works with both videos and still images.

This environmentally friendly HD LCD display uses 50% lesser material resources and is also mercury-free, earning its reputation as a “green” monitor. Integrating HDMI and analog RGB terminals, the display can be controlled externally with JVC’s RS-232C terminal.

JVC announced the ultra slim GD-32X1 LED TV has finally come to the U.S. The JCV GD-32X1 has been retailing in Japan since August for about $2,500 USD. The 32-inch super-slim flat panel HD TV is just 1/4-inch thick at its thinnest point and weighs only 12.5 pounds, making it light enough to hang on walls and ceilings.

The GD-32X1 has been earning a reputation as a “green” TV with its mercury-free HD LCD display using 50% lesser material resources, and it reportedly manages 100-percent coverage of sRGB colors and 90-percent of Adobe RGB.

Despite its svelte size, the GD-32X1 also offers a variety of inputs, including analog RGB, component/composite, and two HDMI ports. Plus, it includes SD/SDHC card and USB slots for viewing photos, as well as RS-232C connectivity and a stereo 3.5mm mini-jack.

Xiview GD-32X1 comes with two built-in 5W speakers, an SD/SDHC card slot and a USB port. GD-32X1 supports JPEG and MP3 playback from SD cards and USB storage devices. This sleek TV will be available in November 2009 and is priced at $3000.
